30 March 1872
On the 30th March we arrived at Greymouth, where the bar is very bad and dangerous. A small Steamer tenders the large ships. The breakers go quite over the deck, and altogether it is a wild and dangerous place.
On landing, I was addressed by a fellow Passenger on the “Frisco” line, who kept the best Hotel, to which we accompanied him. The Town had been nearly washed away by a flood in the Grey River, which rises in flood time,
occ 40 feet in height.
